A Holiday Portrait

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

The Christmas Season is a busy time of year. People are often torn between what they may be obligated to do and what they would rather do. For many of us, the Holidays are about our families and we would rather spend our time enjoying the Season with them. In some families there are a mix of children: those still living at home and those who have moved on, starting families of their own. Sometimes these older kids move away to other regions, making frequent visits impractical. This makes Holiday visits from them even more meaningful.

During Christmas week, I had the opportunity to create images for such a family. Their older kids had returned home to visit and, with everyone together, the timing was right to capture that memory — to preserve it and celebrate it for years to come.

Collage-01

I crafted this collage to print as a 20×20 image. My ambition in this layout was to show their togetherness. Even as the family had grown, evolving into new units, they are still a strong, unified family. Their choice of clothing contributed nicely to this theme. I simply looked for a unique way to present them not only as the individual units/couples they are but also as a family, bound together in spirit, though both distance and busy schedules may physically divide them.

Cheers,
-Mike.

Slinky! A Slinky. Everyone loves a Slinky!

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Do you remember playing with a Slinky as a kid? You know, Mattel’s famous walking Spring Toy. Isn’t it funny how such a simple thing, really nothing more than a metal coil, managed to amuse and entertain so many young minds?

I remember watching Mattel’s Slinky commercials during Saturday morning cartoons and smiling with delight, to watch a Slinky wriggle down the stairs! No joke, things were so simple then . . .

Have you ever noticed how some people are like a Slinky? Although they’re not good for much, it still makes you smile to push them down the stairs.
